What Happens to a Casino Account You Stop Using

Published 23 July 2026 · By Sarah Donnelly, iGaming Editor

Most casino accounts are not closed. They are abandoned, with a few pounds left in them and a saved card attached, and then they sit there. That is a slightly worse outcome than it sounds, for three reasons that have nothing to do with gambling.

What actually happens to a dormant account

After roughlyWhat the operator typically doesWhat it means for you
1–3 monthsReactivation marketing begins, often with a targeted offerThe messages are aimed specifically at people who stopped. Opt out rather than ignore.
6–12 monthsThe account is flagged dormant; some operators begin an administrative fee against a remaining balanceA small balance can be eroded without you doing anything. Check the terms for a dormancy clause.
12–24 monthsLogin may be suspended pending re-verificationRetrieving the balance now requires the verification process you avoided at the start.
BeyondData retention continues under the operator's stated policy regardless of activityClosure and deletion are separate requests. Closing an account does not by itself erase the record.

The three-step exit

One: empty the balance first. Withdraw whatever is in there before you request anything else, because a closure request with a live balance turns into a manual process and stalls. Use a payout destination that already has history on the account; GambleDragon's guide to wallet payouts and the terms attached to them covers which destinations tend to clear without an extra ownership check.

Two: ask for closure in writing, and say which kind. "Close my account" is ambiguous. Operators distinguish between a temporary self-imposed break, a time-limited exclusion and a permanent closure, and they have very different consequences for whether you can reopen. Name the one you want.

Three: kill the marketing separately. Marketing consent frequently survives account closure as a separate database flag. Withdraw it explicitly and in the same message, or expect to keep hearing from them.

Why bother, if the balance is two pounds

Because the balance is not the asset. The account holds a verified copy of your identity documents, a saved payment instrument and a behavioural history, and leaving that sitting in a system you have stopped paying attention to is the actual cost. Closing it properly takes about ten minutes and removes all three.

And if the reason the account went quiet was that you decided to stop, closing it is the version of that decision that survives a bad evening six months from now. An open account with a saved card is a decision you have to keep making. A closed one is a decision you made once.
